Challenge Yours(h)elf Book Club
Stephen Chbosky's The Perks of Being a Wallflower
Tuesday, November 10
6:45pm - 8:00pm
Maplewood Memorial Library
Study Room 4A monthly book club on the first Tuesday of the month focusing on banned and challenged books
Why are books challenged or banned? What’s the difference? Can this happen here? Is there anything we can do about it? Maplewood Library’s Challenge Yours(h)elf Book Club will investigate these questions and more – all within the context of books that have been challenged or banned around the country. Some things may surprise you, some may not. Either way we promise lively and informative discussions each month!
This month we’ll discuss Stephen Chbosky's The Perks of Being a Wallflower. The club will be led by Amanda Eigen, Maplewood Library Assistant Director and Law for Librarians Certified Trainer.
Chbosky's coming-of-age debut young adult novel is often banned or challenged, including in 2025 when it was second on the American Library Association’s “Top 10 Most Challenged Books” list.
From the publisher:The Perks of Being a Wallflower is a "funny, touching, and haunting modern classic" that "takes a sometimes heartbreaking, often hysterical, and always honest look at high school in all its glory."
